    RichardBy RichardMarch 14, 2019No Comments4 Mins Read

    An essay is a detailed and reasoned text devoted to a problem. This genre is distinguished by free form. Here individual impressions and subjective considerations on a particular topic are important. Vivid examples (including from personal experience), journalistic elements and artistic metaphors are also possible. The essay obviously does not claim to be an exhaustive interpretation of the subject and assumes the form of “I-statements”.  At the same time, like any scientific text, the essay should be logical and demonstrative. 8 8. Keep track of the ease of narration!
    9 9. Stick to a special tone of voice!

    1. Choose the specific topic or question!

    The topic of the essay is always specific, some researchers say that it has a private

    character.  For example, the themes of M. Montaigne’s essay: “On Old Age”, “On Glory”, “On Self-conceit”, “On the Book,” “On the Bad Means That Serve the Good Purpose,” “Against Idleness,” “On the Great

    finger ”, etc.

    This is not a direct dependence on the topic. Except the author’s work may be the starting point in the author’s thoughts, express the relation of part and whole.

    2. Keep the structure!

    Start writing an essay with structure definitions. It should contain:

    • Problem statement;
    • Examples and Arguments;

    3. Define the problem!

    First, answer the following questions:

    • What problem does this question lead to (this topic)?
    • Why is the reasoning on this topic important, why is this question interesting for you?
    • What other questions need to be addressed to uncover the topic?

    In the introductory part, you can state the thesis or hypothesis that you want to develop or prove. You can also start from a quotation from the work of a researcher or philosopher, explaining how he understands a particular thesis and how he allows opening the topic. In this case, be sure to include a link to the source of the quote.

    4. Give examples and arguments!

    In this part of the essay, describe these questions:

    • Which example (life story, film, literary text, etc.) best illustrates this topic?
    • How does this example reflect the problem the essay is about?
    • Are there any facts confirming the assumptions, thesis, hypothesis?
    • What evidence of your judgments (opinions, assumptions) can be given?

    5. Express your personal opinion about the problem!

    In the essay, the author’s position is pronounced. The essay is a subjective genre. It is interesting and valuable precisely because it gives the opportunity to see the identity of the author, the originality of his position, style thinking, speaking, attitude to the world.

    6. Make the right conclusions!

    To do this, you need to answer the following questions:

    • What conclusions did you come to, was the hypothesis confirmed?
    • What questions remained unresolved?

    In conclusion, a brief analysis of the very experience of writing this essay is possible. What turned out to be the most difficult? What came to mind at once? With what opinion or suggestion did you have to part with as you were writing?

    The author of the essay may refer to other studies (the source of direct or indirect quotes must be indicated).

    7. Keep your essay in the right amount!

    Of course, there are no hard boundaries, but even the most eloquent essayist, as a rule, limits his work to several pages. Sometimes, it is enough to have one sheet, several capacious, thought-provoking phrases.

    8. Keep track of the ease of narration!

    It is important for the author of an essay to establish a confidential style of communication with the reader. To be understood, he avoids intentionally complicated, obscure, excessively “strict” constructions. In general, a good essay can only be written by someone who is fluent in the topic. Sees the topic from different angles. Present the reader with an incomplete, but the multidimensional view of the phenomenon that has become the starting point of his thoughts.

    9. Stick to a special tone of voice!

    The essay is characterized by the use of numerous means of artistic expression: metaphors, allegorical and parable images, symbols, comparisons. According to verbal construction, an essay is a dynamic alternation of polemical statements, questions, setting on the spoken intonation and vocabulary.

    These simple and useful tips will help you make your essay interesting and high-quality!  We wish you success!
