It's ok to be wrong sometimes |

I’m a huge NPR fan and not afraid to admit it. What I am often afraid to admit is when I am wrong - just ask my friends and family. Perhaps you are like me and are wondering if the Paul the oracle octopus will be right on his prediction for Spain to win the World Cup. He’s been right on so far. But he could be wrong.
So when I read this interview with Ira Glass yesterday – which has a lot about being wrong, this piece really stuck out for me:
“One of the reasons I was interested in doing this interview is because I feel like being wrong is really important to doing decent work. To do any kind of creative work well, you have to run at stuff knowing that it's usually going to fail. You have to take that into account and you have to make peace with it.”
It got me thinking about our work online. You can’t really learn about what is tried and true without trying different things and being wrong from time to time. There are a lot of great innovators online and it’s likely what we don’t hear about is all the things they tried that failed, in order to get them where they are today.
A few thoughts about being wrong online:
• Monitor your statistics. Your intuitions may be right on. But sometimes they are not. It’s ok. Use the data to help you learn.
• Remember, you don’t have to test new things on everyone. Pick specific smaller segments of your file to test new messages, ideas, programs, etc.
• Technology changes, housefiles change, hot button issues change. Just because it’s tried and true, doesn’t mean it can’t change. Retest those assumptions from time to time. What was once right might now be wrong.
• Be honest about when you were wrong. Don’t hide it, share with your colleagues, learn and move on.
I know, it’s easier said than done. There’s a great example here where the Humane Society of the United States tried something new and failed, but found a silver lining in an unexpected donations boost. Let’s all keep trying new things, being wrong, examining our data and learning.

History is littered with people who were wrong or got it wrong then went onto greatness. Testing things is the only real measure for gaining results.

A couple of comments hit the nail on the head in my opinion- to paraphrase: 'It's not how many times you're wrong that counts, but how many times you overcome it' and 'It's OK to be wrong as long as you don't get used to it' I also have a view that there are very few areas where there is only one single unique RIGHT answer, therefore who's to say that what you have done will turn out to be wrong in the longer term? I've sometimes adopted the strategy of MAKING something work even though at first sight it seems to be no good. You could say it's 'pushing back the boundaries of my knowledge and experience' but sometimes it's just been a waste of time - but at least I've learnt not to do it again! George

Ouch the spam comment hurts my eyes! Anyway with regards to your blog post I will have to agree, because everyone makes mistakes in order to improve and learn. I once posted some misleading info pertaining to an issue in my blog, which almost got me into trouble. I made an apology and my readers seem to be cool with it.

Take action, make mistakes and figure out what works for yourself and what doesn't. I've discovered that you can learn a lot by asking other people or by reading or watching. Sometimes however you have to try something and see for yourself and then it will be inevitable to be wrong from time to time.

The confrontation of being wrong is so difficult sometimes, it keeps us from admitting it. That's usualy where the problem lies. Most anyone will forgive, as long as the mistake is brought to the light and is allowed to be viewed by all. Until this is done, progress is difficult.

My father used to say, "If your not screwing up your not moving forward fast enough."

It doesn't matter how many times you've made mistakes. What does matter is how many times you've overcome it.

I had a friend once that said he was wrong once. Turned out he was thought he was wrong about something, but was right.

Paul Heyman, ECW owner and Wrestling legend, once said: "You cannot achieve success if you fear failure. If you´re not afraid to fail, you have a chance to succeed. But you´re never gonna get there unless you risk it all the way. I´ll risk failure. Sometimes have the fun is failing. Learning from your mistakes, licking your wounds and not really looking forward to getting my a** kicked the way I just did yesterday. So now, I´m just a little more dangerous!"

The best trick to learning from mistakes, and learning from being wrong, is to learn from other peoples mistakes, and error. Its less painful that way.

Mistake is a part of life, without making mistakes there is no way you can learn. All you can do is stay strong and one day the mistakes you make will always have a reason to them.

is about maturity to realize that is normal to be wrong! wrong and right is very subiective... what is wrong for me can be right for you and each time there are many versions of truth.

You're right, but sometimes you can find whats tried and true and still have a hard time making it work. there are so many details involved with the web that it can get confusing and one can get lost in the details. :)

What I've discovered is growing up is all about learning by making mistakes. If you knew everything going in, why try anything new.
