How Mobile Loaves & Fishes is using technology and social media to change perceptions of homelessness |
Alan Graham, President of Mobile Loaves & Fishes (MLF), said it perfectly during his presentation at the AFP Austin luncheon today – there is no magic bullet, and there is no get rich quick method when using technology to raise funds for your nonprofit. He apologized for the sports analogies, but he compared online marketing and fundraising to blocking and tackling, singles and bunts and every now and then you hit a homerun. With a small staff, big hearts, and the right mix of singles, bunts and a few homeruns, MLF continues to raise more funds, increase its volunteer base of more than 12,000 and accomplish its mission of providing food, clothing, dignity, and housing to the homeless and indigent working poor. Alan’s message is simple - having a strategy, using the right tools and focusing on the fundamentals can make all the difference.
Alan’s presentation also highlighted MLF’s social media efforts, and how they are embracing tools like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube to change people’s perception about homelessness. Check out the video below to see what MLF is trying to accomplish and how. And, starting tomorrow to mark the beginning of Austin’s SXSW Interactive festival, MLF is kicking off its Tweaster Twegg hunt that is using…yep, you guessed it…Twitter. Here are a few details of the contest and read more about the campaign at www.mlfnow.org/twegg. Alan has a goal to get over 1000 followers, so let's help him get there!!
Twegg is the name that MLF has given to two different contests that will take place around the time of SXSWi 2009.
