In setting the tone for last week's panel discussion,  Vinay Bhagat started the conversation by outlining where online communications techniques and best practices for nonprofits have come from, what we are seeing practiced now and what he believes we might see in the near future.

Three distinct time periods were brought up in the discussion -

2003: Tiny email files growing through viral marketing and micro-campaigning as seen in the Dean '04 campaign

Today (2008): Multi-channel marketing mixing the use of mobile, email, social media, video and offline media and a large focus on "conversion" of moving constituents from one step to the next

Future/Emerging: Scientific, strategic approach to psychographic segmentation with an end to a "one size fits all" communication methods and building relationship pathways through technology

Tying these practices together, Vinay stated that the overarching concept which has emerged over the past 5 years is that of constituent empowerment, stating that "the Internet is really all about a social fabric" and there is an immense "social energy" present online for nonprofits to harness.

Here's the full-length version of Vinay's discussion:

Is there anything you would add to this timeline or set of predictions?
